[1.6.1] email module - compose view does not load

After upgrading a particular installation from 1.5.2 to 1.6.1, the compose view in the email module stopped loading completely.
It appears as though the process is interrupted at some point, as if some JS file is either missing or broken.
Some elements do load whilst others don't.
The main problem seems to happen when loading the contact list at the top.

Detected on Firefox 3.5.7.

Puzzle half-solved solved.
Some SQL statements in the contacts table got broken.
Just wondering why and how exactly it happened.
