What is contact role in workspace for?

If you edit a contact in a workspace you can put in a "Role in workspace". What is this "role" for? Is it a kind of "job describtion" like "position" or a user rights thing? I think it is the first one, right?

Yes, the first one.

Unless used on a customization, it is just and informative field.
