Open Source Presentations
« on: September 17, 2008, 02:18:47 am »
Have the folks on this forum seen AxPoint (http://axpoint.axkit.org/). Neat way to generate a presentation from XML markup. Similar to MagicPoint (http://member.wide.ad.jp/wg/mgp/) but a lot simpler.

Having said that, the game is changing for presentations. I hear that Microsoft's next version of PowerPoint will support a movie-like expereince with continuous timelines (no more slide transitions).

A few Open Source Online Video editors:-

1.) Movie Masher: http://www.moviemasher.com/
2.) Kaltura: http://corp.kaltura.com/

Besides in the YouTube generation, it does make sense to move more towards a movie or video presentation than just slides. Any comments ?
:-)

Hi justforkicks,

The problem with creating presentations from XML is that many people refuse to use something that is not a WYSIWYG editor, and OpenGoo aims to be usable for everyone. Maybe it would be cool to have both alternatives, like with FCK (where you can write HTML with the WYSIWYG editor or by editing the source code).

With our presentations (Slimey) editor you can edit the source to some extent, which is XHTML with CSS, but I know it's not very practical. The problem with Slimey is that it hasn't evolved since its first release, because we prioritized many other OpenGoo features which are usually more important to users than creating presentations. We would gladly change Slimey for a more mature Open Source presentation editor, but it should have a WYSIWYG interface.

Concerning moving towards video presentations, I agree that slides are getting old, but people still use them. I guess slides are the right tool for some cases. I personally don't use slides too often.

I'll have a look at those video editors that you posted and see how they could be added to OpenGoo.

Thanks for your info and ideas!

Also check out ZuiPrezi (http://test.zuiprezi.com/). ZuiPrezi is a zooming presentation editor which allows you to easily create stunning presentations. It allows users to create dynamic and visually structured zooming maps of texts, images, videos, PDFs, drawings.

My point is that the game is changing and there is no sense in making yet another Power Point clone any more.

You are right. the truth is that  when we developed Slimey there were no Open Source Web based Presentation editors.
As we needed one for OpenGoo .... we decided to create it. We know it is far away from the best commercial&closed source alternatives, but we expect to find people interested in developing it a bit more (or replacing it for a better one).
Thanks for all the feedback.

Marcos,

You might want to also check out W3C's HTML Slidy at http://www.w3.org/2005/03/slideshow.html#(1)
