Hi all:

we had two or three main topics on Tuesday:

We are performing a redesign of the spreadsheet server architecture. No big deal, but is a must in order  to maintain certain aspects of the code and the posibility to extend it, etc.

There are several changes on the client side too, with the same purposes .
in addition to this, the browser compatibillity issue is top priority and let me tell you is a headache (among other pains).

Before moving on, we have the need to consolidate and ensure what we've got so far (and test it, of course)

news coming up in a couple of weeks
keep posting!!

Fernando

Using this really cool scripting language called Rebol (http://www.rebol.com), you can create small applications that are surprisingly powerful. For example, check out RebCalc (a 2 KB spreadsheet) at http://www.rebol.org/view-script.r?script=rebocalc.r

Rebol code works in over 43 platforms unchanged and the interpreter is rather tiny. There is also a RebWiki that works like a Word processor. And finally Rebol supports dialects or so-called Domain specific languages, so you can create a dialect that is specific to solving a particular problem. For example, one can create a Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) dialect so that Excel macros work inside OpenGoo.

Open Source Presentations

Also check out the MagicPoint Presentation tool. MagicPoint takes a very different approach to the problem of editing presentations. This tool is based on plain text files and a custom markup language. Editing of slides is done with an ordinary text editor; the resulting file must be fed to the utility to see the final result.

Check it out: http://member.wide.ad.jp/wg/mgp/

Magicpoint has a few other neat features as well.

1.) Scribbling on slides during presentation with the mouse (two colors)
2.) One pixel time thermometer, visible to speaker, generally not on overhead projector: green for lots of time, yellow for wrap-up, red for time's up
3.) "swallow" features allows one to run an external program (X11) within a slide!
4.) %filter allows one to filter text in a slide through a rendering engine (such as latex2eps) to generate images which can then be displayed within slides.
5.) A variety of pauses, "cut-ins" (text sliding in from one side or another), fades (slide transitions) are supported. There aren't many of them, and they should be used sparingly, but they're simple and functional.

Folks,

I know this might disappoint a lot of people but I seriously feel that we need to have a spreadsheet component before OpenGoo 1.0 release. Even if it means that we will probably have something like TrimSpreadsheet or OpenRecord we should still include that for the sake of completeness. For a lot of people, Spreadsheets are the very reason they use an Office productivity suite and not having that in the first release might reduce the impression of OpenGoo.

@justforkicks:

Hi:

The alpha version of the spreadsheet is almost complete. It was implemented as a stand alone module and we are integrating it with opengoo.

There are minor issues that we are taking care of before release.

bye!

Looks really nice, but it's developed in Java, so it wouldn't be too practical to integrate with OpenGoo as it would add the requirement for Java on the server.

The spreadsheets module hasn't been finished yet, and although you shouldn't take this as a promise, expect it to be finished in the next couple of versions.
