General Discussion / Re: Website Issues
« on: October 03, 2007, 02:16:48 pm »
Thanks for your feedback Grooviak.
We agree with you completely!
We have been delaying our website reconstruction until we have a more stable product to show. We are commited to improving the product itself, and we will be releasing again within the next month (possibly with a website reconstruction).
Thanks again for your feedback!

Architecture / Re: Suggestion: Project-Open
« on: September 12, 2007, 03:13:17 pm »
bnordgren,
we  - at OpenGoo - really appreciate you took the time to write all
this down. We consider it gives us a good chance to explain why we are
here.
The first thing I would like to state is that we chose ActiveCollab as
a starting point to build a Web Office, as oposed to building
yet-another-project-management-tool.
Our plan is to take advantage of the architecture, functionality and
features of ActiveCollab but not to be tied to it in any sense. As
just stated, our objective is different from the one of ActiveCollab.
You are right when you say that adding document edition to
project-open looks like a great idea. But what do you think the result
would be? I guess we would have an excellent project mangement tool
with document edition features.
We feel that this might be a good idea for some users, but that
approach is different from ours. We want to give users the possibility
to access Opengoo, create different types of documents, save them,
share them or even publish them. Project management features are not
our first priority at this moment, because we think there are lots of
them. However, we couldn't find any open source web office.

Applications / Re: Revision Control
« on: September 12, 2007, 02:16:14 pm »
The first version will use the same version system included with ActiveCollab. Currently, when you decide to save changes to a document you will have the chance to generate a revision or not.
The supported file format are:
- html for documents
- trim-spreadsheets ("adapted" html) for spreadsheets
- S5 ("adapted" html) for presentations
As you might have noticed, we are currently developing some of these features and testing others.
In the near future we hope to find collaborators to work on exporters for a variety of open formats (i.e. ODF and PDF for instance) or even closed formats (MS Office ones). Currently we are researching the web trying to find modules useful to do html -> ODF conversions.
Ideas are welcome.

I found these interesting ideas in ProjectPier  forum:
http://www.projectpier.org/node/172
I also found a sugestion to use a WYSIWYG editor, but not just for files but for all the other texts.
Just for the record, these guys have realeased their first release candidate version.

Components / Re: On the presentation compoment alternatives
« on: September 02, 2007, 07:44:28 pm »
Another aternative I was looking at could be
W3C slides
This is a recommendation for presentations done in the W3C, the idea is similar to S5, so I considered it was good idea to mention it ...  just 'for the record'.

This is a tutorial for creating the slides : http://www.w3.org/Talks/Tools/how-to-use-w3ctalk-proj.html
A utility that makes it work with old browsers:
http://www.w3.org/Talks/YYMMsub/
Another w3 document about slides:
http://www.w3.org/Consortium/Offices/Presentations/xsltSlidemaker/

My (early) conclusions:
Yesterday, while doing research concerning SMIL I thought it could have been a good idea to use it. However, after doing a little bit more research on S5 I found that the standard is widely accepted and used. Moreover, there is currently some work in progress with the editor (also note that S5 offcial webpage does not have activity since July 2006 - not 2005 ). The truth be told, the simplicity and "openness" of S5 is the main reason to make me think it is the best choice.

The truth is, whichever format we choose, we must reasearch and work on conversors (pdf would be my first choice).

My approach would be to use fckeditor to help edit each slide. As fck produces html, and each S5 slide is html there should be no problems there.

PS: The credit for the idea of using SMIL goes to Ignacio, I only did a bit of research.
