The point of archiving is to remove old or completed objects from your working area, to remove clutter. Compression has nothing to do with archiving.

That may be a bug. As well, the message may be misleading or incorrect.  Even as admin, I cannot assign subscribers to contacts. This may have something to do with the fact that contacts are actually available system-wide, not really sure.

1. Yes that's basically it. There are a few older threads that deal with a migration in the forums, perhaps you can search for those.
2. The administrator can. For a non-admin, check "understanding user rights" in the wiki.
3. A workspace can be assigned to multiple users, is this what you mean?

You can add the ability to manage reports in Administration, Users, Permissions. Not sure if you can make them read-only or not, I haven't tried this but you could experiment.

I would think this is akin to the ability to move posts in a forum like this one. Often people will post in the wrong place, it only makes sense that it can be corrected by an administrator.
