Older versions / Automatic Update in 1.5 final
« on: July 28, 2009, 03:55:06 am »
I realize that not all automatic updates will work as each host is different, but my only suggestion is ask if it is possible to have a friendly OG error message if the upgrade doesn't work for some reason?

For example, I knew it wouldn't work on my host, but my browser gave me this unfriendly error, which to a non-technical user can be daunting:

Quote
FastCGI Error
The FastCGI Handler was unable to process the request.

Error Details:

    * The FastCGI process exceeded configured activity timeout
    * Error Number: 258 (0x80070102).
    * Error Description: The wait operation timed out.

HTTP Error 500 - Server Error.
Internet Information Services (IIS)

I'm not asking for an explanation of this error nor a solution to it, only if it is possible to gracefully fail and return to OG.

Feature requests / do away with zip
« on: May 27, 2009, 02:24:48 am »
Again, I experienced the PITA problem of not having zip available (zip_open yada yada yada)  for the latest automatic upgrade. Others have posted their problems with it too (1, 2, 3), no doubt there are others who don't bother posting and just do it manually.

This brings me to request that we get rid of the requirement for the php-zip extension.  Do upgrades really need that much bandwidth that the files need to be zipped?  You could guarantee automatic upgrades would work so much smoother if you could get rid of this.

1.4 final / Latest Comment Widgets is forgetful
« on: May 27, 2009, 01:52:15 am »
On the overview page, the widget that displays the new user help widget for "Latest Comments" always comes back, no matter how many times you dismiss it.

General Discussion / Forum Badges
« on: May 13, 2009, 03:27:13 am »
I appreciate that the devs are really busy with 1.4, but one small suggestion for future consideration (after you get this done of course!) is to make forum badges for people.  I was thinking of one for Feng Office Subscriber, but you could also extend this to Project Sponsor or whatever else.

Feature requests / Milestone Multiplicity
« on: May 01, 2009, 01:47:40 am »
I have a certain methodology that I use for almost every client.  One of those things is creating a milestone called "Administrative", which is basically unpaid prep work for the project.  However, when I create a milestone with this name for more than one workspace, it becomes a bit of a mess, as you can see in the attached picture.

I see two solutions, the easiest one that the devs might suggest is for me to name my milestones with the workspace (project) name, but I don't like this because it clutters every other screen with this long name where it is mentioned.

The option I prefer, which I'm submitting as a feature request, is for all milestone dropdowns to include the workspace name.  This is no different from when you look at the All Workspaces Overview, and see the coloured workspace name next to notes, documents and tasks.

Older versions / What the heck is going on? Milestone mayhem!
« on: May 01, 2009, 01:16:50 am »
(see attached image) I can't figure out why the milestone in green, which clearly belongs to another workspace (Lill), is appearing in this (Brid) workspace?

When I go to the Lill workspace, Tasks, choose that milestone, edit, the workspace it is assigned to is Lill.

Can someone explain why it is appearing under Lill?

Everytime I think I have a grasp of how OG works, I get another curveball..!

How To's / Wiki entry wrong for Workspace Permissions?
« on: April 30, 2009, 11:35:24 pm »
In the wiki on the User Rights page under Company Level Permissions, it says, "If a company has no workspace permission at all, then you can't set workspace permissions for users of that company. (But as soon as you have set at least one permission, users can be given permission to any workspace, as stated above.)"

However, In 1.3.1 I can create a company with no workspace permissions, and then create a user for that company, and I can also set his workspace permissions, contrary to what that says above.  Is that second bullet point wrong, or is there a bug in 1.3.1?

Feature requests / Small & easy but helpful task feature request
« on: April 30, 2009, 08:56:03 pm »
I know this is really minor, but I think would help a lot of people (well, me).

In the Task view, if there is no Group By set, the title above the task list shows up as "Tasks".  This left me scratching my head on numerous occasions wondering why my milestones had disappeared.  Perhaps changing it from "Tasks" to "All Tasks" would be more accurate, and give the dumb user like me a clue as to the fact that their milestones are still there somewhere.

General Discussion / Documenting Tips & Tricks
« on: April 29, 2009, 06:43:38 pm »
Not sure if anyone is updating the documentation, but I'm also starting to find a lot of interesting tips and tricks sprinkled throughout forum replies by the dev team & members.  This tips & tricks index would point to various forum threads, and include subject matter that is typically not in the manual, for example, Add a logo to the login screen.

I'm wondering if it would be alright for me to help by making an index of tips & tricks and either put it in the wiki (I have an account) or else as a forum sticky?  Which would you prefer?

Older versions / "Sorry Selected Email is Already Taken" - more info
« on: April 29, 2009, 04:20:42 am »
I'm posting this here because I think this bug continues from v1.3 onward and has not been fully addressed.

New fresh v1.3.1 install.  I create my first client company (there are no others), and in the email address field I type the company's owner's personal email address since it's a 1-man consulting firm.

Then from the Client Companies screen, beside the new company I click Add User, and enter this dude's info, including the same email address I used above for his client company.  I get the "Sorry selected email is already taken error."  Fine, so I back out, go to edit the client company, delete that email address and save.

I return to Add User, and it STILL gives me the same error.  That email address exists no where else in the system since it is a new install.  There is nothing in the trash.  I tried logging out then back in.  Somehow it remembers that the email was used once, and won't release it.  This person has only 1 email address, how can I create a user for him??

Furthermore, in this thread, ignacio you say "but it was done purposely, because there can't be more than one user with the same email address".  Like Karl and technomensch, I disagree with this.  Some small companies have people share single email addresses that point to a position that multiple people share - not a person - such as accountspayable@, shipping@, support@ etc.

And please do not ditch usernames in favour of email addresses!  Bad bad idea, I've seen this before and it is more trouble than it is worth.

Older versions / Session expiry bug
« on: April 26, 2009, 06:41:10 pm »
Although this is for v1.3.1, I'm guessing it also applies to 1.4beta, since I didn't read that it was addressed.

Normally after a certain period of inactivity, OG logs the user out and presents a log in box (see attached pic).

However, I've noticed that it only logs the user out if they are in the following modules:

tasks
weblinks
contacts
email
notes

And it does not log me out while in the following modules:

overview
documents
Time
Reporting
calendar

Tested in FF 3.0.9

Feature requests / General Timeslot - use minutes just like Tasks
« on: April 25, 2009, 02:07:35 am »
With Tasks, time is specified in hours+minutes.  In General Timeslots, you can only enter hours but not minutes. This means you have to convert hours+minutes to hours with a couple of decimal points. (I use CalculateMe to do my conversions.) This takes extra time. Most people don't estimate time with decimals, they use hours and minutes.

I thought the point of General Timeslots was that it is a quick way to enter timed activities, but if one has to go through the extra effort of making a conversion, then this defeats the purpose.

Would it be possible to add a minutes box to General Timeslots, just like Tasks?

cheers

Applications / Chat :: Support Chat :: Web Meetings :: Whiteboard
« on: April 23, 2009, 11:05:46 pm »
I have a few interesting collaborative applications I've run across.  Not entirely sure if they fit in OG, but food for thought:

Chat - Some of my clients have been using Spark for years, and now there's SparkWeb (which I haven't used). Spark has proven to run incredibly bulletproof and straightforward to use, and SparkWeb may be something to consider. I realize there is another thread about a chat extension, but since that has not been included in the latest release, I'm not sure if it will ever become part of OG. Spark is proven and has a long history, and I'm sure SparkWeb will follow in its footsteps.

Support Chat - similar to but slightly different from the above, support chat is something that would be useful when giving your clients access to OG and having someone available for one-on-one support. Open Web Messenger is one such app that could create a new revenue stream or offer greater support capabilities for a company that uses OG.

Web Meetings - Dimdim Open Source edition (GPL). Nuff said.

Whiteboard - I can't seem to find a good open source whiteboard app, but something as simple as sneffel or as full featured as Twiddla could be a great collaboration tool if you need more than just text.

Definitions / Definition of Web Office 2009
« on: April 23, 2009, 10:44:20 pm »
There appears to be no official Milestone 2 to followup on Milestone 1.  However there are many suggested apps in this Development\Applications board. Some seem to resonate with people, and others do not.

Part of what I think may be the problem is that the definition of a web office was started, but not fully fleshed out.  Time lines for new OG releases seem to not be following any particular road map, and I'm wondering if it is time to revisit this again? Without a road map, or regularly updated definition of a web office, people will suggest what they think is valuable to them, you will add what you think is valuable to you, but there will be no agreed-upon common ground upon which to reference when deciding.

Other considerations:

1. Will only open source applications be allowed? If so, what licenses are acceptable and which are not? The advantage to this is that if a particular application does not/does meet this criteria, then it is easy to reject/approve as a possible candidate for inclusion.

2. What about using a wrapper or include so that non-foss or officially-rejected applications can be added into an OG tab by the community (for unsupported customization and functional extension)?

3. Is the definition of web office changing? How? Are the lines blurring between web applications and desktop applications, and how does this affect the strategic direction of OG?

4. You might consider using polls to field some questions to the community rather than just wait for post replies, which have proven to be sparse. People might be inclined to click on a poll but don't feel they want to contribute their thoughts for whatever reason.

5. Finally, what categories of applications should be included in OG, as compared to Milestone 1? For instance, there are currently no forum, blog or photo apps yet these are priority 2, yet there is an alpha spreadsheet which is priority 3.  Have these priorities changed, or have the categories of applications changed?

6. Comparing OG to other platforms, is OG headed in the same direction as was originally thought?

food for thought!  :)
