How To's / Task duplication in templates

I'm a new user and am trying to get my head around creating templates. I followed the steps in the Wiki, created tasks and milestones and then assigned them to a template, gave them parameters and so on. That all seemed fine. Then when I created a project from the template, all the tasks became duplicated - the tasks within the milestones did not retain the parameters I'd set, and then another whole set of tasks were created WITH the parameters, but did not link to the milestones. Does anyone know what I did wrong?
I do wonder whether it would be better for milestones related to templates to take on the due date of the latest due task, rather than a fixed date set at the time of the template creation.
