: How to use workspaces
: tamalita May 08, 2009, 12:36:52 AM
The way that I have set up my OpenGoo is for each client to have their own workspace, and then within that workspace, I create the milestones and tasks associated with different projects. Now that I'm seeing how the billing categories are working, I am thinking that within the client workspace, I need to create project workspaces, so that I can actually assign billing categories to the projects. How do you use the workspaces?

Hi Tamalita,

Every type of project has a workspace and in this workspace, every project has its own workspace.
I link a client to the workspace of his own project(s).

When a project is done/cancelled I put it in an archive-workspace.

thank you for this insight. I may seriously need to rethink how I'm organizing things lol

Hi,

This is just the way I use them ...
It's definetly not the only was and I don't think there is a right way. Everybody has to find one suitable way for his own use.

koko is exactly right, you have to do what works best for you as the workspaces system is quite flexible.  There is more info on the wiki  (http://wiki.opengoo.org/doku.php/workspaces)that may help you.

cheers

I think I've got it! I do like having my clients have their own workspace and I've started putting the projects as sub-workspaces and that is working brilliantly!!

glad you got it to work for you :)

How do you mark projects as done. Please advice.

Thanks
Ravi

Hi,

For the moment it isn't possible to really mark workspaces, but I move the workspaces to the a workspace zz_Archive. zz_Archive is on top-level.

At the moment I'm not that happy with that system ... I'm trying to rethink my structure ...

Any thoughts on Project Arching and marking it as completed?

Thanks

That's how I've been doing mine... I put general client stuff in their main WS, and then sub-spaces for projects. Most client personnel would have access to the general space, but only those directly involved with a project have access to the sub-space. Basically, if you're not on that project, you never see it on your screen.

I haven't needed this yet as all my projects are still current, but I think I might try something similar to what koko suggested above.

Cant we carry the feature of activeCollab for marking projects are finished and archiving them. aC 0.7 works well with this.

Thanks
Ravi

Maybe better is change the state of workspaces?
For example: Planned, In progress, Paused, Completed, Archived.
And add tabs with this names to workspaces list.
Or add labels for workspaces instead of mark as archive (In development, Designing, Testing) and add filter by it.

Seems to be a perfect suggestion. With this, it will enhance the system for sure...

Newbie question - can you drag projects from one workspace to another?

If you have a project in the Pending workspace and it has been completed, can you easily drag it to to a Completed workspace or should you just rename the workspace?

I guess dragging projects wouldn't work if there are multiple files (calendar, links, etc.).   ???

OpenGoo doesn't use "projects" objects, perhaps you mean workspaces?  If so, then no, you can't drag a workspace to another workspace. You can, however, go into its properties and make it a subworkspace of another workspace, which would be the same effect as dragging.
