Version 0.8 released, 1.0 getting closer

We have just released version 0.8 of OpenGoo. You can read the release notes at the forum. It is yet another incremental improvement and a step towards 1.0 and our vision of the ‘Online Office’.

Version 1.0

We have a much better idea of what 1.0 will be now.

One very important thing: 1.0 should have the least possible amount of bugs. Of course bugs will always find their ways, but this is the top priority: to deliver a top-notch, professional app.

Some things we sure want to include in 1.0:

  • Better Task Management
  • Time tracking
  • Better e-mail support
  • Improve some usability issues
  • Some reporting functionality
  • …and a couple of Easter eggs here and there ;-)

There is one - rather important - feature that might not make for 1.0: Online Spreadsheets. Because the team working on this is a graduate students group, the product might not be quite there for the release date. They are doing very good progress, and soon an alpha version might be published. We’ll keep on cheering and mentoring them as much as they demand.

Estimated time of release for 1.0 is end of October. But this would be our first non-beta release, so it is hard to estimate and therefore this information is not a promise.

The future

After 1.0 we will not only keep working harder on coding OpenGoo: we will improve our planning, communication, and further champion community growth. Usability and performance will remain on our top priority list.

As for features: that will depend mainly on two things: what the community asks for, and what - hopefully - paying clients ask for. Sponsors of new modules or features are very welcome and will not only get the best open source app to fit their needs, but also receive the gratitude and recognition of the community. :-D

  1. First of all, Congratulations to the team !

I have been using OpenGoo since version 0.6 and the improvements are impressive. Wish you the best for OpenGoo 1.0 development.

A few improvements and ideas for future development:
    MINOR
    - auto resize of pictures when we preview them full screen, so that they fit the size of the screen.

    MAJOR:
    - Of course spreadsheet application. As I am also part of eyeOS community, you may have a look at eyeSpreadsheet…

    - Another idea: I am really looking for an “Access like” or “Filemaker like” application allowing the user the define fields and forms and manage customized databases. Could be a great improvement to the Office suite.

Good luck and thanks for the hard work !

  2. Hi Alexandre.

    Thank you for the encouragement.

All three ideas are excellent. I hope we are able to implement them all soon. Keep them coming!

  3. Some more ideas to strengthen the document module:

    - Log document views by users
    - Allow users to mark/flag documents as read/unread/important and let administrators know about these flags

    Looking forward to 1.0!

  6. I just found out about OpenGoo and think it’s great! I’ve been messing around with eBox lately. Have you guys thought about partnering up? Maybe the eBox guys can add your install to their system. I’d love to see a business server system with all the features! Anyways OpenGoo looks great; can’t wait to try it!

  7. Very nice and easy to use. I am looking for Spreedsheet and proper email client. Right now email client doesn’t display emails in proper format. All the body appears as one sentence. No Paras. Sending email is fine.

    Keep it up. Good work

  8. Very promising, simple and intutive indeed.
Can you consider the following requirements, which in my opinion shall make it a killer product:

    1. Built-in LDAP support to add users and grant permissions
    2. Have ODF support buit in: to import ODF documents and export to ODF.
    3. Use Subversion to store document versioning.

  9. Thanks all for the nice comments.

@Anand: We have considered all three of your requirements! We do want to add all three capabilities. The only thing stopping us are other priorities and lack of time.

We are currently four developers working full time, and other four working part time.

Good software takes time, so things never go as fast as one would like.

Right now we are focusing on making the tasks management better, we have some issues with messages not being “intrusive” enough, no WebDav support, etc… and all those are still on top of the three you mention. :-(

In order to have this new features sooner we will need to either grow the community or find ways to hire more developers.

Again, thank you all for your comments and thoughts, and you too keep it up! :-D
